Fintech Dashboard
Overview
A Lagos-based fintech startup needed a sophisticated yet intuitive dashboard to help small business owners manage finances, track transactions, and gain cash flow insights — without requiring financial expertise.
The Challenge
Small business owners in Nigeria manage finances across multiple platforms — mobile money, bank apps, POS systems, and manual records. The challenge was to unify these data streams into a single dashboard that works on low-bandwidth connections.
Research & Discovery
I spent two weeks conducting field research in Lagos markets and business districts, interviewing 30 small business owners about their financial management habits.
78% used at least three different tools to track money. Most relied on WhatsApp screenshots as financial records. Trust was the primary concern when adopting new fintech tools.
Design Process
I developed a modular card system allowing users to customize their dashboard. Data visualizations used familiar metaphors — bar charts resembled market stall inventory counts, and cash flow was represented as a river flowing in and out.
Solution
Dark theme default for eye strain reduction. AI-powered transaction categorization with user confirmation for trust. Conversational notifications like "Your sales are 20% higher than last Tuesday — great work!" The client secured Series A funding partly based on the strength of the product design.
